Work, interests and personal time

Build a routine that leaves time for relationships, interests and life beyond a to-do list.

Define the working day

Clear expectations help when emails and messages arrive at every hour. Where possible, tell colleagues when you are usually available and plan focused time for important work. A short note at the end of the day can help you pick up where you left off tomorrow.

Enjoy time away from tasks

Free time does not have to be productive. You could read, watch a film, explore a neighbourhood or simply spend an afternoon without an agenda. Treat interests and friendships as valuable parts of ordinary life, even when they do not produce a measurable result.

Stay connected

Arrange a walk with a friend, share a meal with family or call someone you have not spoken to in a while. Make space for everyday conversations that are not about work or organising household tasks. The best plan is often the simplest one people can realistically keep.

Share the everyday workload

Cooking, shopping, travelling and household admin all take time. Talk openly with the people you live with about what needs doing and what can wait. Dividing practical tasks in a way that feels reasonable can create more space for everyone’s other interests.

Adjust as circumstances change

Some weeks will be busier than others. Instead of aiming for a perfect split between work and leisure, notice which activities matter and find a manageable way to protect time for them. A flexible approach leaves room for both responsibilities and surprises.
